Autogenic Training (AT) is taught as an eight week course following an initial assessment. Clients are asked to complete a questionnaire, prior to the initial personal assessment. The assessment enables the therapist to tailor the course to the needs of the individual and to ensure that the client gets the most out of the course. It also provides an opportunity for both client and therapist to get to know one another before the course starts. Occaisionally there are times when it might be best to wait a while before starting a course (e.g. when recently bereaved or when medically unstable).

During the AT course, the client is being trained in using the technique. Practicing the technique during the sessions and at home, the client will go through a therapeutic process, "letting go" of tension that has been stored up over the years.

AT is taught individually or in a small group in eight weekly sessions lasting an hour or an hour and a half. The course requires daily practice (you can do an exercise almost anywhere). An exercise can take between two and twenty minutes.

During the eight week course, the six standard exercises of AT are taught. The standard exercises are based on what the body does naturally in a deeply relaxed state. Although everyone learns the same techniques, everybody responds differently. Group numbers are always kept low to allow for individual guidance and the therapist is available throughout the course for consultation if necessary.

A follow-up session is arranged for a few weeks after completion of the course to see how things are going.
